With bucketfuls of enthusiasm, I threw myself into exploring various art and design techniques through print, photography, fine art and illustration, specialising in graphic design as I focused my talent at Chester art college, then Stockport, where I was awarded an HND in Graphic Design.
Landing my first design job, straight after graduating, as a creative graphic designer for the major UK food retailer Iceland PLC, in Deeside, Flintshire I gained a wealth of graphic design knowledge within the food industry sector, namely packaging design, of which I am still passionate about today, along with point of sale design and also art direction for food photography.
The next chapter of my design career was to go self employed. I set up a graphic design business (Smart Graphic Designers) in 2008 and helped many start-up business clients and established business clients, along with the renowned UK heritage organisation National Trust, for whom I have designed an array of creative and branded literature, signage and promotional support.
I recently evolved and re-branded as ‘Sue Yates Design’ – time for a change and to showcase my proven experience and expertise in graphic design to prospective clients, whilst reinforcing my brand to existing clients and keeping that personal touch to my design offering.
When I’m not working on client designs, you might find me painting, drawing, gardening or even attempting DIY!
I love all kinds of food and enjoy healthy cooking and baking. I like to keep myself fit and active by jogging, cycling and walking our dog up and around the hills nearby, and along our beautiful coastline.
Music is another love – it helps me focus on my creative work (or dance around the kitchen!). I aspire to write and illustrate short stories for children one day – my boys tell me I should write a book of all the bedtime stories I tell them!
